Structuring Your Story (Square).jpg

June 20, 2026

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Do you have an idea for a story but aren’t sure how to start it? Or stop it? Or what to put in the middle? Maybe you’re partway through a draft, but aren’t sure which way to turn next. Or, perhaps, you’ve plowed through a draft but aren’t sure how to revise it to look like you knew what you were doing all along. Maybe you’re afraid of using a story map out of fear of your fiction becoming too “predictable”. This class will go over the benefits of using a story structure to map your fiction and explore the many options we have beyond the beloved hero’s journey.

Author/Illustrator Visits and Story Time

Jacob Haffner and I love sharing The Squirrel and the Moon with young readers and students. Jacob's background in education, my background in the performing arts, and Jacob's musical talents make us an engaging duo to share this heartwarming story. Our events can be adjusted to fit available time slots and tailored to grades TK-6. The presentation includes a reading of the book, engaging discussion questions, review of vocab words, a behind-the-scenes author and illustrator talk, a musical performance of the song, and a photo opportunity (if desired) with our squirrel puppets. We can do library readings, classroom visits, and assemblies.

Please email me via my contact page with your event requests and questions with "Author Visit" in the subject line. We look forward to connecting with you and young readers!

Reviews:

“I liked that Jacob and Clarissa clearly had a general script already for what they would say and how they would progress through their time with the kiddos, while still remaining flexible in modifying details to better suit my preschool and transitional kindergarten kiddos. I loved how a key part of their presentation is going over the vocabulary words within their story, as well as, of course, their singing of the story/song. The kiddos all loved the song, as did the teachers, and I recommend this presentation to everyone!”

"The author visit for the Squirrel and the Moon was so adorable! The author, Jacob, was informative about his process for writing his book, and the illustrator, Clarissa, shared her experience creating the pictures for the book. Both the author and the illustrator had examples of their work from childhood, and also told about how they got interested in writing and illustrating. Our students especially enjoyed the musical version of the book with the squirrel puppets."

“My kindergartners really enjoyed the book and the explanation of the process to make it. I even had one student create his own version of the book later that day and another inspired to create his own book.”
